MISSOURI

COURSE OFFERINGS IN SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

Missouri does not have a required state social studies sequence, although the state requires a minimum of two units of social studies for graduation. Students must satisfactorily pass a one-semester course in government in order to graduate from high school. Sequences vary from district to district. Required courses include survey courses in American History and World Studies (history or geography) in almost all districts, and government and economics in a lesser number of districts.

CURRENT CURRICULUM PROJECTS:

State Curriculum Framework Project, State Assessment in Social Studies, Law-Related Education, Economic Education, International Education, Geography Education.
Missouri is in the beginning stages of developing performance assessments for grades 4, 8, and 10 or 11 in social studies. Such assessments are scheduled to be implemented in the spring of 1999.

Grade & Code Test Description

3-10, (U, M, S) Assessment of student knowledge and skills in social studies for the cluster areas of geography, history, government/ civics, economics, and other social studies competencies. Called the Missouri Mastery and Achievement Tests (MMAT), these tests are multiple-choice and criterion-referenced. There are items for each objective with three correct items set as criteria for mastery.
Local districts are required to give the test two non-consecutive years in grades 3-6 and grades 7-10.

Social studies test objectives for the MMAT, grades 3-6, are available from the Assessment Resource Center (2800 Maquire Blvs., Columbia, MO 65201) in Core Competencies and Key Skills for Missouri Schools: Grades 2 Through 6 (January 1991 - $45 for all five grades, which includes four subjects, one of which is social studies; $10 for each separate grade, which includes four subjects, one of which is social studies) and a similar book for secondary grades, Core Competencies and Key Skills for Missouri Schools: Social Studies/Civics Grades 7 Through 10 (January 1990 ) is available from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (see address below) for $10.
Missouri's Framework for Curriculum Development in Social Studies will be available in December 1996 at a price not yet determined (mail requests to Warren Solomon).
