Lastings Links offers schools, classrooms, and student clubs the chance to be partners with Third World villagers in an actual development project. Students select a project by region or country, language or cultural group, or project type (food, health, education, environment, etc.). These projects can become a classroom simulation of a Peace Corps experience-helping people in need and getting to know a Third world village. The program can generate teacher-teacher and student-student pen pal relationships, exchange of art projects, sound tapes, and even school-school partnerships.

Law Day USA, established in 1958, is celebrated annually on May 1 to show our appreciation of the liberties we Americans enjoy and to rededicate ourselves to the ideas of quality and justice under the laws. National coordinator for Law Day USA is the American Bar Association, which each year establishes a theme for the celebration. The ABA prepares a detailed planning guide to assist individuals and organizations (including schools) in conducting Law Day programs. In addition, the ABA makes available many promotional/educational/informational materials, ranging from buttons and balloons to leaflets, brochures, booklets, speech texts, and mock trial scripts.

Over the years, the Midwest Valley History Conference has a featured the presentation of papers and panels on a wide variety of history topics of interest to all historians and history teachers in the Missouri Valley region. Invitations for papers to be presented at the conference are open. The program coordinator also invites volunteers to serve as moderators and commentators. MONTICELLO-STRATFORD HALL SUMMER SEMINAR FOR TEACHERS

Co-sponsored by the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation and the University of Virginia, the Monticello-Stratford Hall Summer Seminar is held in Virginia each summer. Participants are chosen by a selection committee from a pool of applicants. Teachers from states west of the Mississippi are reimbursed for documented travel costs, up to $400; successful applicants are furnished all books and course materials, as well as room and board. Teachers from all grade levels are eligible. Nebraska teachers who have participated in the seminar praise the experience highly.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has offered grants that pay teachers to take a year off from their education duties to improve knowledge of history, literature, and foreign language. The program is called the Teacher Scholar Program.

Nebraska State Council for the Social Studies is dedicated to improving the quality of social studies education in our state. Membership is open to all educators who have an interest in the social studies; elementary as well as secondary teachers are invited to join. Membership fees are low and NSCSS provides a variety of services to members, including a newsletter highlighting social studies education and a fall conference, held in conjunction with NSEA Teachers Convention, that always features an outstanding program.
